What an AI chatbot actually costs for a small business website in 2026

Published July 31, 2026

If you run a salon, a clinic, a trades business or a small shop, you have probably been told you need an AI chatbot on your website. What nobody tells you is what it costs — because most of the industry has quietly stopped pricing in dollars.

Here is what you will actually pay in 2026, and the one line in the pricing table that decides your bill.

The credit problem

Almost every AI chatbot now sells "credits" or "message credits" rather than conversations. It sounds like a unit. It isn't.

On Chatbase, a single reply consumes between one and six credits depending on which AI model answered it — and you don't choose the model. Their Hobby plan is $40/month for 1,500 credits. If your replies average three credits, that's 500 replies. A real conversation runs five or six exchanges, so you're looking at roughly 80 to 150 actual conversations for $40.

Tidio's Lyro works differently but lands in a similar place: it's an add-on starting around $39/month on top of a base plan, and the effective rate works out around $0.58 to $0.65 per conversation.

The pattern is the same everywhere. The number on the pricing page is not the number of conversations you get, and you cannot work out the real figure without knowing something the vendor doesn't publish.

What that means in practice

Say your website gets 300 people a month asking about prices, hours and availability — modest for a busy local business.

| Platform | Published price | What 300 conversations costs | |---|---|---| | Tidio Lyro | from $39/mo add-on | roughly $175–195 | | Chatbase Hobby | $40/mo, 1,500 credits | roughly $120–145 | | SiteGPT Starter | $39/mo, 4,000 messages | around $39 | | AutoFlow Chat | $29/mo, 400 conversations | $29 |

Two of those quadruple once you read the small print. Two don't.

We're not the cheapest per message in that table — SiteGPT is genuinely competitive, and we'd rather say so than pretend otherwise. But we are the only one where the number on the box is the number you get.

Questions worth asking any vendor

"Is that per conversation or per message?" A conversation is typically five or six messages. A plan advertising 1,000 "messages" is around 170 conversations.

"Does a reply ever cost more than one unit?" If yes, ask what makes it cost more, and whether you control that. Usually you don't.

"What happens when I run out?" Some platforms stop answering. Some bill overage automatically. Both are worth knowing before it happens on a Saturday.

"Do I need my own OpenAI key?" Many WordPress chatbot plugins are free to install and then require an OpenAI API key you fund yourself. That's a second bill that grows with your traffic, and it's the reason a "free" plugin can end up costing more than a paid one.

The setup cost nobody quotes

The subscription is rarely the expensive part. The expensive part is the afternoon you spend typing your services, prices, opening hours and policies into a blank text box — and the weeks afterwards when it confidently tells a customer something you never said.

That second problem matters more than price. A chatbot that invents an opening time costs you a customer and the trust of the one who drove across town on bad information. Ask any vendor what happens when their bot doesn't know something. If the answer isn't "it says so and offers to fetch a person," keep looking.

What we built instead

AutoFlow Chat reads your existing website — your pages, your WooCommerce products, your contact details — and fills in what it finds. You check it, correct anything wrong, and save. Nothing goes live until you approve it.

It's $29/month CAD for 400 conversations. No credits, no API key, no second bill. If it doesn't know something it says so and hands the visitor to you by phone, email, WhatsApp or Messenger, rather than guessing.

If you're on WordPress, the whole thing happens inside your dashboard — install the plugin, pick a plan, and it connects itself. There's no key to copy and no code to paste into your theme.

Thirty-day money-back guarantee, no contract. [See AutoFlow Chat](/site-chat).

Prices quoted are the vendors' published rates as of July 2026 and change often. Credit-to-conversation figures are estimates based on published credit consumption ranges — your actual usage will vary with how long your conversations run. Check current pricing directly before deciding.
